Benefis Health System’s internal medicine residency is now in its second year, strengthening both medical education and the healthcare workforce in Great Falls.
The program began last year with 10 physicians who had completed medical school. According to KRTV, it has since grown to 32 residents training and caring for patients in Great Falls. The goal is not only to educate new doctors, but also to give them reasons to build lasting careers and relationships in the community.
Benefis estimates that Great Falls has 15 to 20 fewer primary-care providers than national benchmarks would suggest. The health system says its residency program is already contributing care equivalent to two primary-care providers. That capacity is expected to double next year and support an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 patients.
