From Backyard Garden to Family Farm: Red’s Root Cellar Grows Near Great Falls

A backyard garden near Great Falls has grown into a family-run farm—and a story about what it can look like to come home, build a business, and put down roots in north-central Montana.

KRTV reports that Alysha and Nick Morenz expanded their garden season after season until it produced enough food for them to begin selling what they grew. After the couple had their son, they decided to move back home to Montana. Today, Red’s Root Cellar grows specialty vegetables, herbs, plant starts, and flowers near Great Falls.

The farm also gives local families a hands-on seasonal experience. Visitors can pick their own bouquets, while customers can purchase produce through an honor-system cooler. The couple hopes to add a larger farm stand, expand its growing space, and eventually offer gardening classes. They also purchase many of their seeds from a Montana grower-owned cooperative whose varieties are selected for the state’s short growing season and cool nights.

Red’s Root Cellar is a small but vivid example of Great Falls’ entrepreneurial spirit. Community-scale businesses like this add local food, memorable family activities, and personal character to the region—qualities that help workers and returning residents imagine building a life here.
